Moving Mountain Nepal 2020 donation program
/Menstruation education and support for adolescent girls in Nepal
Moving Mountain Nepal completed our 2019 donation program providing both school bags and menstruation education and sanitary pads for adolescent girls in several districts of Nepal.
We will focus or continue to work on menstruation awareness and Pad distribution for 200 girls in 2020 as well as school painting programs this year.
It has already been 4 years since the Moving Mountain Nepal ‘School Bag’ team have been working hard to support children in a variety of remote government schools by providing them with school bags filled with everything necessary for their studies, providing a strong incentive for them to continue their education. By working closely with the local schools and communities Moving Mountain Nepal has gained valuable knowledge concerning the root problems facing continuing education among young students. We have seen the positive changes made in rural communities over the last 4 years including the reconstruction of collapsed school buildings and classrooms - many of which are only now nearing completion. There has also been some improvement with new access roads to rural communities where earlier we would have to carry the bags with porters up steep hillsides to reach the communities. New cottage industries are springing up giving better economic opportunities to those living in the remote areas. We are happy to share these experiences first hand and it was possible only with the continuing support of our generous supporters and donors. Since our first donation in May 2015 we have already reached more than 4300 students from Okhaldunga, Kathmandu, Sindhupalchowk, Dhading, Sindhuli, Kavre and Nuwakot districts.
Added to our ongoing school bag donations we have expanded our program to include a menstruation awareness program and classroom mural painting. To mark the anniversary of the April 25, 2015 earthquake, we fully decorated the Shree Taribhir Basic School in Budhanilkantha with lively painted classrooms on April 25, 2019. In the light of this success, we are fully aware that the impact on the children of the Moving Mountain Nepal ‘School Bag’ project is more psychological than physical instilling pride in the children’s ownership of a personal bag and books as well as educationally inspiring paintings on the walls of their classrooms.
In partnership with Unatti Foundation, Milwaukee Nepali Pariwar and other various helping hands, we were able to support 535 school children in 2019. Schools were selected from our previous schools donation program based on their current needs and situation. We would like to thank everyone who has contributed to the success of Moving Mountain Nepal and joining us on this amazing journey helping to make a better world for children in remote areas of Nepal.
We started an awareness program on menstrual hygiene in a local school to the north side of Kathmandu, where we screened 5 short films on Menstruation and distributed reusable sanitary pads to 50 women (45 girls students and 5 female teachers).
Our partner for this program- Milwaukee Nepali Pariwar had donated funds for 70 girls this year. The rest of the sanitary pads will be distributed during the 2020 programs.
We greatly appreciate all our supporters and donors for taking an initiative in helping underprivileged students and supporting Moving Mountain Nepal. We are also thankful to all the women filmmakers who provided their work to screen to bring awareness.
